What I Eat in a Day | Healthy Meal Ideas from a Dietitian

October is the time of year that we're finally starting to get lots of fall produce, but there are still a few summery foods hanging around too. That means for this What I Eat in a Day video I have a nice mix of summer and fall foods. I love the transition period between seasons for this reason. The mixing of foods from the previous season and the next one is the best! I hope you get some real food meal ideas and inspiration by seeing what I eat in a day in October.

Feeding Your Baby WITHOUT Purees (Registered Dietitian)

Baby led weaning (BLW) is becoming more and more popular. With baby led weaning, instead of spoon feeding your baby purees, the baby gets to explore whole foods at their own pace. At first, it might sound a little scary to give a 6 month old child large pieces of whole food to chew and gnaw on their own, but it's a method that many families are enjoying. So what is baby led weaning and what is the idea behind it? Also, how do you know if you child is getting enough food and what about the risk of choking? I'm talking about all of that, plus my review of the Baby-Led Weaning book.

Fitness Bands Make it HARDER to Lose Weight?!

Lots of people use fitness bands and trackers to help them move more, be healthier, and even lose weight. Whether you're using a FitBit, Jawbone, Garmin, Apple Watch, or some other tracking device, you probably have the same general goals in mind. But do they work? And could they actually make it harder to lose weight? A new study published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) took a look at long term use of these types of devices and whether or not they help people lose more weight over time. The results are pretty interesting.

HUGE Harvest from Organic Garden!

I cannot believe that I got all of this in one harvest! There's a little bit of every in the mix, including tomatoes, tomatillos, cucumbers, peppers, and LOTS of beans! It's always so exciting to me to see all of the food that comes out of the garden, but this particular harvest was insane!

For a point of reference, I'm in Virginia in Zone 7. All of the plants in the garden were either seeded directly or started from seed inside. I like to grow heirloom varieties, so there are a lot of tasty and interesting types that you might not have seen before!

Sugar Industry Paid Off Researchers?!

A recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that the sugar industry played a role in influencing dietary research and dietary recommendation in the 1960s. Not only did the Sugar Research Foundation fund the research in question, but according to the report they also may have influenced the direction and findings of said research. This was at a pivotal time when there was lots of discussion about heart disease and what role diet might play.

Antibacterial Soap BANNED by FDA

Antibacterial soaps have been in question for a while now, but the FDA just made the move to ban them. According to the FDA, antibacterial soaps don't provide any benefit over regular soaps and there are potential risks to using them. 19 ingredients have been banned, including triclosan and triclocarban. The ban will go into effect in a year.

Note: Something that I didn't mention in the video is that 3 other ingredients are going to be reviewed over the next year, so we still don't know if they will be banned or not. Those ingredients are: benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol.

Do You Need a Protein Shake After a Workout?

But who can actually benefit from a post workout protein shake? And are shakes and powders even a good option? Here's what this dietitian and nutritionist has to say.
