Protein from Plants? What You NEED to Know!

When we think of protein foods, we usually think of animal products like meat, milk, and eggs. And, while it is true that animal foods tend to have more protein than plant foods, that doesn't mean that we don't get protein from the plant foods we eat. But, which plant foods are complete proteins? In other words, which plant foods have all of the essential amino acids that we need? This is good info to know, especially if you're vegetarian or vegan.

People ANGRY Over Plus-Size Activewear

Nike has recently launched a new plus-size line of activewear. The workout clothes come in sizes 1X-3X and include larger bra sizes too. This is great news for any Nike fans who couldn't wear their clothes previously and it points to an overall issue of limited activewear options for larger individuals, but some people aren't happy about the new line. Several internet commenters responded to the new line with complaints that the clothes promote obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. Sigh. There are so many problems with this line of thinking and, as a dietitian, I have some thoughts.

Ranking the Healthiest Girl Scout Cookies?!

I recently saw some articles floating around ranking Girl Scout cookies based on how healthy they are and I think it's ridiculous. You might be thinking "Wait! Sarah, you're a dietitian! Don't you care about health?" Yes, of course I care about health, but I don't think ranking Girl Scout cookies does anything to promote health. In fact, it plays into the diet mentality, which isn't a good thing. A cookie is a cookie and if you're eating a cookie it should be the one you enjoy.

Veggie Seed Haul! Heirloom and Rare Varieties!

I’m so excited that it’s finally gardening season! I finally got all of my seeds in the mail and I thought it would be fun to do a seed haul and show you everything I bought. I ordered my seeds from Seed Savers Exchange and Baker Creek because they have a lot of fun heirloom, historic, and rare varieties. I love growing fruits and veggies that you can’t get at the grocery store and you might not even be able to find at your farmers market. Most of the seeds in this haul are new to me, but there are a couple that I’ve grown before.

What I Eat in a Day | Healthy Meal Ideas from a Dietitian

Here's a look a what I eat in a day! On this February day, things were a little different from my normal routine, but that didn't stop me from making meals that were tasty and satisfying. Chest Freezer Tour!

Food Label Change to Save Your Money + Waste Less Food

Foods labels can get confusing, including the expiration dates. There are so many different terms including 'best by,' 'sell by,' 'use by,' 'enjoy by,' and others. It can be hard to know if that thing in your fridge is safe to eat or not, and all of this confusion means that perfectly good food gets thrown away, along with the money that was spent on it. It'd all be a lot easier if things were less confusing, so the Grocery Manufacturers Association and Food Marketing Institute have brought forward some standardized terms for the industry.

The Diet Myth We ALWAYS Fall For!

There are lots of diet myths out there, but this one is especially sneaking. It comes back again, and again, and again, some somehow we always end up falling for it. This is the myth that one food or one food group is the source of all of our problems. It's sounds silly when you say it like that, but that's exactly the idea behind so many diet fads. The low-fat, low-carb, gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free crazes all based on it. So why is this myth so pervasive? And why do we keep getting sucked in?

What's In My Chest Freezer + Tips for Buying One!

But Don't You NEED to Count Calories?!

Whenever I talk about not dieting, not counting calories, and not weighing and measuring your food, I often get some push back. The question is usually something along the line of: "I mean eating a healthy balanced diet and not tracking everything sounds great, but don't you NEED to track your food to make sure you eat the right amount? You can't just eat unlimited amounts of food! What's to stop you from eating more than you need? This is a great question and one I think is important for us to discuss. I think this question really shows how dieting and the diet mentality are a part of our general culture and it reveals two main ideas about food and eating.

What I Eat in a Day | Healthy Meal Ideas from a Dietitian

One of the hardest parts about eating healthier can be figuring out what exactly you're going to eat. That's where this What I Eat in a Day video comes in! My hope is that this peek at what I eat as a dietitian will give you ideas and inspiration for your own healthy meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included.

Can Roasted Potatoes and Toast Cause Cancer?!

The Food Standards Agency in the UK recently launched a new campaign to educate people on the cancer risk associated with acrylamide and how to reduce exposure. Acrylamide is a naturally occurring substance and levels of it increase when starchy foods are cooked for too long at high temperatures. With this in mind, the campaign is recommending that people cook starchy foods like bread and potatoes until they are golden yellow or golden brown to reduce the amount of acrylamide that forms. So is this something to stress out about? Here are my thoughts.

Getting Back on Track with New Year's Resolutions

It's that time of year when all of the motivation and excitement around New Year's resolutions is fading and a lot of people are quitting or giving up. If you're in that boat, but also know that you don't want to find yourself making the same resolution again next year, I've got your back! Here are a few things to think about and try so you can get back on track with your resolution and reach your goals.

The Best Detox Diet and Cleanse

Detox diets and cleanses seem to be everywhere. Whether it's the Master Cleanse, a juice cleanse, or any of the other detox diets out there, the main idea is to eliminate or severely restrict the amount of the food you eat to give your digestive system a chance to rest and help remove toxins from your body. But how does the body detox in the first place and do these detox diets and cleanses actually work? I'm sharing all of that, plus the best detox diet out there. If you've been on my channel for a while, you probably already know what it is. ;)

The Problems with Khloe Kardashian's 'Revenge Body'

Just the name of the show Revenge Body sent up some red flags for me. Name aside, I looked more into the show and watched a lot of the preview clips they've posted online and I definitely have some thoughts about it. Overall, it seems to me that the show is based around a lot of messages about weight, appearance, and health that I think do more harm than good.
